The Italian version of the top-floor problem is a stepped lane in a hill town, and it is genuinely the same calculation: how far, how many, and what is the longest rigid thing that can be carried round a fixed corner. Households do get moved into houses where the last stretch is walked in relays. That is workable, it is a longer day, and it gets crewed for honestly rather than discovered.
